Four habits for a cleaner instrumental
- Start from the best file you have. A WAV, FLAC or high-bitrate MP3 gives the separation more detail to work with than a low-bitrate rip.
- Use the finished stereo mix of the song, not a version that already has effects or a voice-over added on top.
- Sparse, clean mixes split most cleanly. Songs with heavy reverb, stacked harmonies or vocal chops can leave a faint trace of the voice, and that comes from the mix.
- Listen to the instrumental in the chorus first. If a trace remains there, try another version of the song, such as a studio cut instead of a live one.
