Four habits for cleaner stems
- Start from the best file you have. A WAV, FLAC or high-bitrate MP3 gives the split more detail than a low-bitrate rip.
- Compare each stem with the full song. Loop a few bars of a busy section and switch between the two.
- Expect a little of one part inside another, such as a hint of the kick in the bass. Stems are rebuilt from the mix, not taken from the original sessions.
- Use each stem for the job it does cleanly. If a stem has leakage, keep the original for that part of the song.
