Before you upload

For cleaner stems
  • Start from the best file

A WAV or high-bitrate MP3 separates cleaner. Compression artifacts bleed between stems.

  • Use the full mix

Upload the finished stereo song. Live recordings and heavy reverb leave more bleed.

  • Pick only what you need

Karaoke or an a cappella only needs two tracks. Full stems take longer and cost more credits.

When you need the music without the singer

Need to remove vocals from a song for a karaoke night, a video or a remix? Find the situation closest to yours and see which track to take.

  • A condenser microphone, headphones, a lyric sheet and a glowing pink vinyl record on a wooden desk, set up for a karaoke track

    Singers and karaoke hosts

You know the song by heart but the only version you have has the original singer on it. You want a karaoke track you can sing over.

Take the Instrumental, keep the lyrics on screen

A karaoke track from the song you actually want to sing
  • A phone on a ring-light tripod, a podcast microphone, a camera with a clapperboard and a glowing yellow vinyl record

    Video creators and podcasters

A track fits your edit perfectly, but the lyrics fight with your voice-over. You need the music to sit underneath you.

Take the Instrumental and lay your narration on top

Background music that leaves room for your voice
  • A pad controller, a laptop showing two separate waveforms, headphones and a glowing blue vinyl record

    Producers and remixers

You hear a vocal line that would work in your own beat, or a groove you want to rebuild under a new topline.

Take the Vocals as an a cappella, or the Instrumental as a bed

Two tracks to chop, layer and rework in your DAW
  • A ukulele, a music stand, a metronome, a tablet showing one clean waveform and a glowing mint vinyl record

    Students, teachers and bands

You are learning a part, or rehearsing without your singer, and you want to hear exactly what the band plays under the voice.

Take the Instrumental to play along, or the Vocals to learn the melody

A practice track that plays the way the real arrangement does

Four habits for a cleaner instrumental

  1. Start from the best file you have. A WAV, FLAC or high-bitrate MP3 gives the separation more detail to work with than a low-bitrate rip.
  2. Use the finished stereo mix of the song, not a version that already has effects or a voice-over added on top.
  3. Sparse, clean mixes split most cleanly. Songs with heavy reverb, stacked harmonies or vocal chops can leave a faint trace of the voice, and that comes from the mix.
  4. Listen to the instrumental in the chorus first. If a trace remains there, try another version of the song, such as a studio cut instead of a live one.

Know the edges before you start, so every credit goes toward a song you can use.
